- It implements the ColorADD colour identification system in its university hospitals in Torrejón and Vinalopó and in Ribera Povisa, a unique, universal and inclusive language, which it will extend to the rest of its health centres in 2025
- There are 2,5 million colour-blind people in Spain and 350 million in the world. It is a genetic disorder that affects 10% of men and 1% of women, and affects the ability to distinguish colours.
Ribera is already the first healthcare group in Spain that has adapted the information and signage in its hospitals to be fully accessible to colour-blind people. Currently, its university hospitals in Torrejon (Madrid) and Vinalopo (Elche) and the hospital Ribera Povisa (Vigo) have already implemented the color identification system ColorADD, a unique, universal and inclusive language that it intends to extend to the rest of its healthcare centres throughout 2025, in the context of its Functional Diversity Plan.

Also known as the “color alphabet,” the ColorADD code provides a visual vocabulary for color-blind people, enabling them to identify colors, while helping society to be more aware of the nuances associated with conditions such as color blindness, which are not visible but purely sensory. In this sense, the Ribera group has opted for an adapted template to communicate this new action framed within our Functional Diversity Plan, which allows us to take a step forward in the universal accessibility that we aspire to for all patients in the group’s hospitals.
Colour has become an important element when it comes to communicating and transmitting information. In the case of hospitals, for example, signage, patient routes and other tools use the language of colour to make the stay and care of users easier. Now, all these elements will also be accessible to colour-blind people.
Until the adaptation of the first three hospitals of the Ribera group, the only healthcare centre in Spain that was fully accessible to colour-blind people was Sant Pau i Santa Creu (Barcelona). The implementation of ColorADD in all its healthcare centres confirms the commitment of the Ribera healthcare group to the inclusion of all groups with cognitive, sensory, physical or psychological functional diversity.
With simple language that can be integrated into the most diverse areas and sectors, ColorADD is present in 90 countries around the world. From healthcare to board games, public transport, football stadiums, clothing and beach flags. In Spain, schools, institutes, social games, beaches and town halls have already implemented this code, which the Ribera healthcare group has already implemented in four of its hospitals and will extend to the rest of its healthcare centres throughout 2025.
