The Breast Area of the Ribera group opts for conservative surgery in 80% of breast cancers

    • The surgical coordinator, Dr. Lorenzo Rabadán, explains that the minimum impact on body image, maximum functional recovery and rapid return to family and work life are always sought.
    • The personalized study of each case by the multidisciplinary and inter-hospital team of the health group and the important advances in the areas of Radiodiagnosis and Pathological Anatomy allow minimizing the extension of surgeries

El Breast Area of the Ribera healthcare group It is committed to conservative surgery in 80% of the cases of breast cancer among the patients of all its hospitals. The surgical coordinator of the Area, Dr. Lorenzo Rabadán, assures that thanks to the extensive information available before the intervention, the personalization of the treatment and the advanced techniques of oncoplastic surgery "we can make the necessary resections, without modifying the volume or the shape of the breast, thus avoiding asymmetries and even treating both breasts, performing a breast reduction or elevation, to achieve optimal oncological and aesthetic results”.

Dr. Rabadán explains that with these conservative surgeries "we guarantee the removal of the lesion, but, at the same time, we look for the minimum repercussion on the woman's body image, her maximum functional recovery and a quick reincorporation to family and work life" . He assures that the surgical approach is part of the treatment of breast cancer "in almost all patients", but adds that the most aggressive interventions, such as mastectomy, "are reserved for patients in whom a conservative approach is not possible due to the extent or nature of the tumor, or in patients with a defined genetic mutation, or with a complex family history. In these patients we try to preserve the skin, the areola and the nipple whenever possible, and we are committed to breast reconstruction at the same time of the intervention, to reduce the impact that the mastectomy has on the patient”.

The Breast Area has four key axes: Radiodiagnosis, Oncoplastic Surgery, Pathological Anatomy and Oncology. As coordinator of one of these strategic branches, Dr. Rabadán explains that "the transversality and coordinated work of more than 50 professionals from all the hospitals in the group facilitates the analysis of each case by a multidisciplinary group and, therefore, the exchange of information that makes it possible to define the surgery with great precision”. In this previous work, he emphasizes above all the role of Radiology and Pathology. “Thanks to precision diagnosis, we have managed to intervene in tumors that would not have manifested themselves until one or two years later,” he explains.

Dr. Rabadán recalls that the incidence of breast cancer "increases between 2 and 3% each year and, in addition, its age of onset is earlier", which is why he insists on the importance of prevention. "Before, we treated postmenopausal patients and now we help many women between the ages of 40 and 55," says Dr. Rabadán. “In the Ribera group hospitals we have the latest technology for diagnosis, surgery and treatment, but, in addition, we guarantee speed and a comprehensive approach to the pathology, caring for each patient in a personalized and close manner, and facilitating support necessary through a nurse case manager and a psycho-oncologist”.
