As part of its commitment to the training and support of patients and their families, but also of other professionals, the Fibromyalgia Unit of the Ribera IMSKE hospital has launched an innovative program, which begins next April 10: the Fibromyalgia Patient and Expert Afternoons.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It causes chronic fatigue, pain—primarily muscle and tendon pain—anxiety, sleep problems, and cognitive impairment, as well as various symptoms affecting various organs. This affects the mood and quality of life of patients, mostly women between the ages of 30 and 60. In Spain, it is estimated that around 900.000 people suffer from this disease, although only 276.000 have been officially diagnosed, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics.
Between April and October, three sessions called "Expert Patient Afternoons" will be held. These three sessions aim, as their name suggests, to make patients experts in managing their syndrome, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, so that they can address it from all perspectives—physical, nutritional, and emotional—on a daily basis. This intensive session is offered every four months, aimed at patients of the Ribera IMSKE Fibromyalgia Unit and healthcare professionals interested in learning about and training in the field of chronic pain. The goal is to help them and others improve their quality of life and well-being.
These sessions are coordinated by Drs. Vicente Palop and Patricia Roth. The first session, on April 10, will feature a presentation of the course. Dr. Roth will discuss the role of meditation and mindfulness in the health of people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. A guided meditation session with physical therapist Silvia Sanchis and a music session with music therapists Ana Alegre and Isabel Bellver will be held.
In the second session of the Patient and Expert Afternoons in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, Dr. Patricia Roth will address neglected clinical and therapeutic aspects in patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Later, psychologist Marisa Fernández will discuss cognitive impairment, the largely forgotten aspect of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Finally, writers Ana Sanchis i Caudet and Rosa Sanchis i Caudet will discuss the power of poetry as a path to well-being and poetry reading.
The final session of the Patient and Expert Evenings on Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue organized by the Fibromyalgia Unit at the Ribera IMSKE Hospital will take place on October 23rd. This time, Dr. Roth will talk about the importance of personal relationships in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome, while Dr. Luiz de Myotanh Vázquez will focus on "The Role of the Family" in this condition. Following this, singer and guitarist Claudia Candela will speak on "The Power of Music as a Path to Well-Being," and music therapists Ana Alegre and Isabel Bellver will host a music session.
