First aid and baby-led weaning (BLW): the keys to safely caring for children from 0 to 3 years old

    • The Ribera Imske hospital offers practical workshops for families and caregivers focused on accident prevention and safe, self-regulated eating.
    • “Information reduces fear and increases the feeling of competence,” explains midwife Elena Pajuelo, who is in charge of the workshops.

Acting quickly in the event of choking, knowing how to perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and starting complementary feeding without fear are some of the main concerns of mothers, fathers, and caregivers in the first years of a child's life. To address these needs, the hospital Imske Riverbank It hosts monthly workshops on first aid and baby-led weaning (BLW), aimed at families and caregivers of children aged 0 to 3 years.

The training is given by midwife Elena Pajuelo, who highlights the advantages of these workshops and why the key is to anticipate: “Training before or in the first months of the baby's life reduces fear, increases confidence and allows for more conscious decisions aligned with the values and objectives of each family.”

Pediatric first aid: knowing how to act makes all the difference

The first aid workshop is designed as a highly practical training course, in small groups of 12 to 14 people, to ensure the active participation of all attendees during its three-hour duration. It covers real-life situations such as household accidents, loss of consciousness, choking, and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), for both conscious and unconscious children. The goal is for caregivers to know how to act quickly and effectively to prevent serious consequences. “Many families live with a constant fear of not knowing how to react,” explains Pajuelo, but adds that “when they acquire clear tools and practice them, that fear transforms into confidence.”

Complementary feeding and BLW: confidence and autonomy

The complementary feeding workshop delves into the baby-led weaning (BLW) approach, clearly explaining when to start complementary feeding, with what foods, how to offer them and in what quantities, always with safety and respect for the child's rhythm.

During the session, the advantages of this type of feeding are explained, both for the baby—greater autonomy, development of chewing skills, and a positive relationship with food—and for the family, who learn to integrate the child into the family dynamic without stress or conflict. “Overcoming fear is fundamental,” the midwife points out. “When families understand how to do it safely, they enjoy the process much more and have confidence in their baby’s abilities.”

Both workshops are held monthly in the attic of the Ribera Imske Hospital, last approximately three hours, and are aimed at both parents and other regular caregivers. According to Pajuelo, the growing demand confirms that “confidence stems from knowledge and appropriate support from the beginning.” Workshop dates are updated here. website and in the Ribera Imske hospital itself.
