The General Surgery Service of the Ribera Povisa Hospital in Vigo is made up of 14 assistants and 4 residents. It seems like a cliché, but our work environment is truly exceptional and we invite you to see it first-hand.

The Hospital where we work has more than 350 functioning beds, 17 of them ICU, and is equipped with all surgical specialties, except cardiac surgery, which facilitates the multidisciplinary knowledge that our specialty requires.

We have been welcoming residents for 11 years, one each year, which means that competition between them is minimal, as there is sufficient volume of both pathology and operating rooms.

The service is structured in the following sections:

    • Colorectal Surgery, where all types of colorectal, oncological and non-oncological, laparoscopic and transanal surgeries, advanced proctology, etc. are performed.
    • Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery, with laparoscopic pancreatic and liver resections, bile duct and implementation of laparoscopic cholecystectomies in CMA.
    • Breast Unit (jointly with Gynecology and Plastic Surgery), which performs advanced oncoplastic surgery or reconstructive surgery with autologous fat.
    • Esophagogastric and Metabolic Surgery, which performs laparoscopic obesity surgery, laparoscopic gastric and esophageal oncological surgery and all types of benign pathology surgery.
    • Abdominal Wall Unit, where laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery (TAPP) and advanced techniques such as the separation of components (botox, pneumoperitoneum...) stand out.
    • Endocrine Surgery, highlighting parathyroid and thyroid surgery.

Weekly we have 20 operating rooms scheduled in the sections described above. These operating rooms are not only in the morning, but there are several fixed daily afternoon shifts, except on Fridays. Our operating rooms are equipped with technology and materials at the forefront of innovation. As of today, we do not have a robot.

The training of a General Surgery resident is not limited only to the operating room. 13 consultations are carried out weekly, divided into Coloproctology, General Surgery and Breast Unit. In addition, two days a week a specific Ostomy Nursing consultation and RICA guide is carried out, for the follow-up of all patients with a stoma on the one hand and delivery of instructions and follow-up of all patients who have had one. applied the multimodal rehabilitation program by another. Likewise, on Friday mornings there is a consultation on Coloproctology techniques, where procedures such as ultrasounds and endoanal manometries, placement of bands for hemorrhoids or neurostimulation devices for patients with incontinence are performed.

Regarding the on-call, we carry out 24-hour in-person on-call, with another surgeon on call service (local on-call). The resident will perform 5-6 shifts a month and always accompanied by the surgeon present at the hospital.
