The Anesthesia Service at the Ribera Povisa Hospital in Vigo is made up of 30 assistants and 4 residents. The hospital is equipped with practically all surgical specialties, which is very important in the continued training of our specialty. It is a hospital with Joint Commission International accreditation since 2013.
The Anesthesia Service has a long history of teaching Anesthesia residents and medical students. In recent years we have received students from different European countries annually in addition to those from the University of Santiago de Compostela.
The work of the Anesthesia Service is not limited only to the intraoperative period, but we also perform perioperative medicine, so that we try to optimize the clinical situation of our patients from the preoperative period, so that they arrive at the operating room in the best possible conditions. We actively participate in the postoperative period since the Anesthesia Service is responsible for the Intensive Care Unit. It is a multipurpose and multidisciplinary ICU, with both medical and surgical pathologies.
Surgical activity is divided into 15 operating rooms scheduled both in the morning and in the afternoon. A large number of surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. In addition, multiple procedures are performed with anesthesia outside the operating room, where we provide assistance to different specialties (Radiology, Digestive, Vascular Surgery, Cardiology, Pneumology, etc.).
We have an important Chronic Pain Unit where Pain Consultations are carried out for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up; as a Pain operating room to address techniques and blocks for the treatment of chronic pain.
The daily shift begins with a guard pass session for patients admitted to the ICU, continuing with the care work that is distributed in the different operating rooms, ICU and PACU; procedures outside the operating room, outpatient and inpatient preoperative consultations, Chronic Pain consultation, postoperative visit and acute pain control. Resident training is divided into several rotations that cover the entire activity of the Service.
A service session, a resident session, Adverse Events sessions and a patient re-evaluation session are held weekly, and general sessions are held fortnightly for the entire hospital.
There are 24-hour shifts in the emergency operating room and ICU. The resident performs 4-5 shifts per month and is always accompanied by 1 assistant in the operating room and 2 in the ICU.
