What should you know?
What diseases do we treat in allergology?
We deal with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of allergic diseases, such as:
• Allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis: common conditions caused by airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and pets.
• Bronchial asthma: respiratory problems caused by hypersensitivity to certain allergens.
• Food allergies: adverse reactions to foods such as nuts, fruits, shellfish, milk or eggs.
• Skin allergies: chronic urticaria, atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis.
• Drug allergies: allergic reactions to antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and other drugs.
• Insect sting allergies: especially against bees and wasps.
Diagnostic tests in the allergy unit
To accurately identify the cause of the allergy, at Ribera Povisa we perform the following diagnostic tests:
• Skin tests (Prick Test): to detect sensitization to various allergens. It is a skin test in which a small amount of the allergen is placed on the skin and the reaction is observed.
• Patch testing: useful for identifying contact allergies, in which allergens are applied to the skin for 48-92 hours.
• Blood Tests: measurement of IgE antibodies to different allergens.
• Controlled challenge tests: to confirm food or medication allergies under medical supervision.
Allergy Treatments
At Ribera Povisa Hospital we offer a comprehensive approach to the treatment of allergies, which includes:
• Pharmacotherapy: with antihistamines, bronchodilators, corticosteroids or immunosuppressants depending on the pathology.
• Oral immunotherapy: Treatment for children with persistent milk or egg allergy that allows for the induction of progressive tolerance under medical supervision.
• Specific immunotherapy: Also known as "allergy shots," which aim to desensitize the patient to the allergens causing their illness.
• Preventive tips: to reduce exposure to allergens and avoid exacerbations.
• Adrenaline autoinjectors: For patients at risk of anaphylaxis, we train the patient in the proper use of these devices.
Pediatric Allergology
On Pediatric Allergy Area At Ribera Povisa, we offer specialized care for children with allergic diseases. Allergies in children require a specific diagnosis and treatment that allows the disease to be controlled from an early age, thus improving their quality of life. We work closely with parents to provide clear guidelines for management and control.
