Valencia, June 29th 2026 – The healthcare group Ribera It recognizes the strategic importance of efficiently managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their direct impact on public health. Therefore, most of its centers have AENOR carbon footprint certification, calculated using the GHG protocol. Now, the decarbonization plan has been given a new boost.
This plan is a key strategy within the Ribera group's environmental policy, which aims to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 25% per unit of care activity (UPH) between 2024 and 2030.
A healthcare model committed to climate and health
Ribera's strategy stems from the recognition that healthcare activity has significant environmental impacts, especially those related to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource management.
In this context, the healthcare group has developed a structured approach to reducing its carbon footprint, based on the rigorous measurement of emissions under the GHG Protocol standard. The decarbonization plan is structured around three main strategic pillars:
1. Reduction of direct emissions (Scope 1)
- Gradual replacement of equipment based on fossil fuels (gas, diesel) with more efficient technologies
- Boost for hybrid and electric vehicles
- Reduction in the use of anesthetic gases with high global warming potential.
- Raising awareness about the use of inhalers with the greatest impact on the environment.
- Control and prevention of refrigerant gas leaks through maintenance and monitoring systems.
- Integration of sustainable design criteria in new centers and renovations.
2. Reduction of indirect emissions (Scope 2)
- Electricity contracting with a 100% renewable guarantee of origin
- Development of our own renewable energy facilities, such as photovoltaic panels
- Continuous improvement of energy efficiency in infrastructure and equipment
3. Cross-cutting actions
- Improving the quality and traceability of emissions data
- Implementation of standardized monitoring systems in all centers
- Awareness and training programs aimed at professionals
Progress already underway and a long-term commitment
The Ribera healthcare group has already launched several significant initiatives that contribute to this goal. These include the production of over 1.240 MWh of renewable energy annually at its facilities; a commitment to energy self-consumption and efficiency in buildings; and the implementation of intelligent building management systems (BMS).
