El Ribera Polusa hospital (Lugo) has performed a total of 50 3D synthesized mammograms with tomosynthesis in just two months, thanks to the latest generation mammograph that this health center in the bank group in the city of Lugo, the only one of these characteristics in the province. Dr. Lucía Graña, radiologist responsible for Breast Imaging at the Ribera Polusa hospital, integrated into the Breast Area of the group, explains that tomosynthesis "facilitates a very detailed image of the breast, which makes it possible to detect lesions that may go unnoticed in other mammograms." “With this technology, the patient's visits to the Radiodiagnosis Service are reduced and the waiting time is also shortened, both for diagnosis and treatment”, he assures, highlighting the agility and excellence of this service.
For Dr. Graña, the super-specialization of professionals is also very important. In her case, as a radiologist dedicated to breast pathology, she assures that "it is not the same to see 50 as 1.000 mammograms a month." “Specialized radiologists are part of multidisciplinary teams, together with colleagues from other specialties, which allows us to know immediately what they need from us to do their job”, she pointed out. In addition, she assures her, at the Ribera Polusa hospital the biopsy is performed the day the suspected lesion is detected and the pathologist reports it in just four days. On the other hand, she adds, "radiologists treat certain injuries percutaneously, on an outpatient basis and with local anesthesia, to avoid the operating room, admission and anxious waiting for the patient and her family."
