Allergology

Allergies occur when our immune system, in charge of defending our body, recognizes a substance with which it comes into contact and reacts to it in a strange way. This reaction can produce a number of allergic signs and symptoms.

Although not all allergies are capable of being cured, in some cases they can disappear with proper treatment. In others, even if it does not disappear 100%, the associated symptoms can improve a lot. Hence the importance of personalized treatment.

Although allergies are likely to appear at any time in a person's life. They usually affect children and young people preferentially.

Mainly, we have two types of tests:
– Skin tests (prick): several drops of different extracts are placed on the skin, usually on the forearm, and a small puncture is made on the skin. After a few minutes, we perform a reading on the arm and check if a wheal (a welt) has appeared on any of the points we have placed.
– Blood test: in the blood study we look for the presence and quantification of “specific immunoglobulin E”, the antibody responsible for allergies.

Although allergies are not hereditary, the predisposition to be allergic is inherited. Those born to fathers and/or mothers with allergies are more likely to end up developing an allergy throughout their lives, although other factors, such as environmental ones, are involved.
