With a comprehensive approach, the Oncology service at Hospital Universitario de Vinalopó is made up of a team of highly qualified professionals committed to offering patients the best care during the fight against breast cancer.
From a multidisciplinary perspective, this service offers complete solutions to patients from the moment the suspected pathology is detected until the post-treatment reviews are completed in collaboration with other teams such as Psychology, Radiology, General Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Physiotherapy, Nursing or Nuclear Medicine in order to offer a diagnosis as early as possible and solutions to each woman that best suit their personal circumstances.
The objective of the unit is to offer the highest quality health care at a medical and human level. For this reason, the professionals who are part of it have at their disposal the most innovative and latest-generation technology, to make the priorities of the center's work philosophy a reality:
3D contrast mammography. One of the applications of technological innovation in this area is a 3D contrast-enhanced mammograph since October 2019 at the Vinalopó hospital. Its technology makes it possible to detect hidden tumors in dense breasts or breasts that are difficult to interpret because they have undergone treatment, and to perform biopsies by tomosynthesis. The sensitivity of this technique is close to 100%, and it is very similar to magnetic resonance, which provides women who have had breast cancer with the maximum guarantees that no other lesion, no matter how small, has appeared. In addition, this mammograph is a great advance for all those patients who, due to different circumstances, cannot enter an MRI: patients with claustrophobia, who cannot turn upside down, who suffer from some type of dementia, cardiac and/or respiratory problems. or who have a pacemaker.
Breast reconstruction. The Tumor Committee assesses each case individually to assess the possibility that the Surgery service performs breast reconstruction in the same surgical intervention in which the cancerous tissue is removed. The objective is for the woman to keep her physical integrity intact after the intervention.
The entire Vinalopó Health Department is currently working on the implementation of the Comprehensive Care Plan for Women that will be completed throughout 2021 and that, among other things, will address the consequences of breast cancer on the pelvic floor, the fibromyalgia and other pathologies associated with women.
